Musicians Guide To Live Streaming

I recently started live streaming on Twitch (twitch.afteraudio.com) and it’s been an amazing experience.  Getting setup for live streaming is not easy and you will need a good amount of free time to get everything configured.  In addition, you may need to invest in some new equipment that is designed for live streaming.

Just remember to start with a simple setup then slowly build and improve everything over time.

Where to start?

What you will need

Live Streaming Software

An Audio Interface (with loopback or virtual channels if needed)

A computer with a dedicated graphics card (gpu).  If possible do not use an integrated graphics card.

I highly recommend the Mac Studio (Apple M1 Max or Ultra) or even the base model Mac Mini for live streaming.  Older Intel Mac's may have issues with streaming.

OBS Studio Quickstart

Don't forget that you need a solid network connection to stream.  I highly recommend that your computer should be directly connected to the internet via ethernet (do not use a wireless connection if possible).

Broadcasting Guidelines

Twitch allows up to 1080p video at 60 frames per second. You’ll need a minimum upload speed of up to 7.4 Mbps.  Try to get at least a 10Mbps connection or higher since the bandwidth will be shared with all devices on your network.

Once everything is configured and tested then you just need to GO LIVE!!!

Don't forget to support all the Musicians that are live streaming today!

I would recommend joining the chat on channels that don't have very many followers and viewers yet.  It will help support new streamers and they will have more time to talk to you and answer any questions.
